Pain has been a part of my life for as long as I remember, so I had just grown accustomed to it as though it was “normal” because, for me, it was. I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia when I was 18 months old. It was corrected by way of traction, reconstructive surgery and a series of casts and braces. I knew the stats on full recovery for someone like me, so I knew that my ability to walk unassisted, to dance, to run, to swim, etc., was an achievement on the part of my surgeon and wholly a blessing, so a little pain wasn’t about to slow me down.
I had an accident in 1998 that involved a whole person falling on top of my head. I saw a chiropractor for that injury and she fixed the problem in a few visits, but I didn’t realize that I should have kept on seeing her because, as I learned over the next decade, that injury would continue to haunt me – causing headaches and limited mobility. She never discussed continuing care with me. Given the nature of the accident I was lucky to be alive. There again, I wasn’t going to let a little pain slow me down.
Then, purely by happenstance, I came in touch with Parkview. Dr. DeLaForest set up a great care plan for me and I began seeing relief right away. Within just a handful of visits I noticed my headaches were less and less frequent, and my mobility was greater and greater. By my first re-exam I had backed my car in to my first parking space in YEARS simply because I could look behind me again! I got out of the car and did a little happy dance in public after that one! I got some funny looks, but I didn’t care. I have not even begun to mention how much my back and hip have improved. It has been delightful!
Most recently, however, was the most dramatic result I have seen. At work recently I was suddenly unable to clearly see the left half of anything. After ruling out retinal detachment or a stroke by one of the Ophthalmologists with whom I work, the migraine hit. The work day was miserable to say the least, not to mention frustrating because my vision had been affected so much. I had an appointment scheduled to see Dr. DeLaForest after work, and I nearly canceled because the thought of having anyone touch my head terrified me given the nature of the pain from the migraine. Something told me to keep the appointment. I came in wearing my sunglasses even though it was evening because I was still so sensitive to light, and he was SO patient with me. I was fearful of getting on the table though I knew I was in capable hands, and though the adjustment was tough that day, I began to feel relief almost instantly. Within a couple of hours of my adjustment, the migraine had subsided to almost unnoticeable. I am so glad I kept my appointment that day, and I am so glad Parkview came into my life. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
